Nominator's project description
| Professor Melnikov is recognized internationally for his work on string theory compactifications and has made critical contributions to their microscopic formulation in terms of two-dimensional quantum field theories. He has also contributed significantly to clarifying the relation between the two-dimensional quantum field theories and complementary mathematical descriptions of string backgrounds. During his stay in Germany, Professor Melnikov plans to extend these methods and to study various aspects of string dualities. |
